Toyota's comprehensive strategy: the resolve to retain internal combustion engines
On December 5, 2025, at Woven City, the technology verification city located in Susono, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan, Toyota demonstrated its determination.
Toyota unveiled three ultra-luxury sports cars it is set to release soon. The “GR GT,” scheduled to go on sale around 2027, will be equipped for the first time with a 4-liter V8 engine as a mass-market vehicle.
The hybrid vehicle (HV) “Prius” has an engine displacement of 1.8 to 2.0 liters. Against the backdrop of increasingly stringent environmental regulations, the car instead introduces a large-displacement engine. As a mass-market vehicle, it will achieve world-class top-tier standards and is positioned as the pinnacle of sports cars.

The Nihon Keizai Shimbunsha and the Financial Times merged in November 2015 into a single media group. Formed by two newspapers—Japan and the UK—both originally founded in the 19th century, the alliance is advancing wide-ranging cooperation such as joint special features under the banner of “high-quality, the most powerful business journalism.” This time, as part of that effort, articles are being exchanged between the Chinese websites of the two newspapers.
