Offshore Bitcoin Miner on the Beihai Oil Drilling Platform—Three Years of Mining at Sea

2023-2026 Beihai
I am an electrical engineer on an offshore drilling platform. The platform generates electricity daily using natural gas, and excess gas is burned off (flare gas). In 2023, the company allowed us to mine Bitcoin with the surplus gas. I set up 20 mining rigs in the equipment room, mining with "waste energy."

Earnings
Mining about 0.005 BTC daily, with almost zero cost. Over three years, I accumulated 5.5 BTC. At the current price of $66,800, that’s roughly $367k. But I don’t sell. I keep them in a cold wallet, planning to hold until retirement (15 more years).

The Most Magical Moment
On April 2, 2026, Trump announced he would “crack down on Iran’s energy facilities.” International oil prices skyrocketed instantly. The platform worked overtime to produce more oil, and flare gas increased. My mining hash rate doubled. That night, I mined 0.012 BTC. My colleagues joked, “You’re working for Trump.” I replied, “No, Trump is helping me burn oil.”

Risks
The platform could be attacked by drones at any time (the Strait of Hormuz is far from Beihai, but who knows). I back up my wallet daily, engraving the private key on stainless steel, and locking it in a safe. If something really happens, at least my family can find it.

April Challenge
I took a vacation back onshore and registered at Gate Plaza for the first time. I wrote down my story, hoping someone will know: Bitcoin doesn’t come out of nowhere. It’s backed by oil, natural gas, and people like me who have drifted at sea for three years. If I get 100 likes, I’ll post a photo of my mining rig.
