Just realized a lot of people don't know how to properly change their SASSA banking details, especially for the SRD grant. The process is actually different depending on which grant you're on, so let me break this down because I've seen so many folks get confused about it.
If you're on a permanent grant like old age or disability, you basically have to go in person to a SASSA office - can't do it online unfortunately. You need your ID, proof of the new bank account (a bank statement less than 3 months old works), and you fill out their Payment Method Change Form. They verify everything and send it to the bank, which takes up to 21 working days. Pro tip: submit before the 15th of the month or you'll wait another cycle for the change to kick in.
But here's the thing - if you're on the SRD R370 grant, you can actually change srd banking details online through their portal, which is way easier. You just enter your ID, they SMS you a secure link, and you update your account info directly. Takes a few days to weeks for the bank to verify, but at least you're not sitting in an office queue. Just make sure the account is in your name only - they won't pay into joint or third-party accounts.
For your phone number, similar story. Permanent grants need an office visit or a call to 0800 60 10 11. But SRD? You can change it online too using their contact details portal. Enter your ID, Application ID if you have it, new number, and they'll send an OTP to verify. Way more convenient than the old way.
One warning though - there are fake websites out there pretending to be SASSA. Always use the official portal or call the official helpline. Your grant info is too important to risk on some dodgy site. Anyone else had drama with updating these details?
