So I finally needed to sort out my SASSA banking details last month and honestly, it was more confusing than I expected. Turns out the process is completely different depending on what grant you're on, which nobody really tells you upfront.

If you're on a permanent grant like disability or old age, you basically have to go in person to your local SASSA office—no way around it. They make you fill out this Payment Method Change Form and you need to bring your ID, proof of your new bank account (bank statement not older than 3 months works), and they'll verify everything on the spot. Takes up to 21 working days after that for the change to actually go through, so timing matters. If you submit after the 15th, you're waiting another month.

But if you're on the SRD grant, it's actually way easier. The whole thing is online through their portal. You enter your ID number, they send you a link via SMS, and you just update your bank details from there. Takes a few days to a few weeks for verification. The catch is the account has to be in your name—they won't pay into joint accounts or anything like that.

Phone number changes follow the same pattern. For permanent grants, just call them or visit the office. For SRD, there's an online portal where you can change it, but you'll need your Application ID. They send you an OTP to verify it's actually you. Honestly, I'd recommend just going in person if you can though—saves the back and forth.

One thing I learned the hard way: make sure you're using the actual SASSA website, not some random link. There are dodgy sites out there claiming they can update your details. Just stick with the official portal and you'll be fine. The helpline is 0800 60 10 if you get stuck.
