Been looking at Pakistan's currency history and it's honestly wild how much the rupee has depreciated over the decades. Back in 1947 when Pakistan was founded, 1 USD to PKR was just 3.31, which seems almost unbelievable compared to today. The currency stayed rock solid at that rate for about 8 years, barely moving an inch. Then things started shifting around the mid-50s, creeping up to 3.91, then 4.76 where it basically held steady for another 15 years. But here's where it gets interesting - starting from the early 70s, the rupee began its real decline. By 1972 it jumped to 11 PKR per dollar, and from there it was basically a one-way street downward. The 80s saw it hovering around 9-10, but once the 90s hit, the depreciation accelerated. I'm talking 20+ PKR by 1989, then climbing through the 30s, 40s, 50s in rapid succession. The 2000s brought more pressure, hitting 60+ by mid-decade. But the real shock came after 2008 - the rupee just kept bleeding value. By 2018 we're already at 139, then 2019 pushed it past 160. And in just the last few years? From 240 in 2022 to 286 in 2023. It's settled around 277 now in 2024, but the trajectory is clear. Nearly 80x depreciation in 75 years. Pretty sobering when you think about what that means for savings and purchasing power.
