Barclays market strategist Julien Lafargue stated in a March 6th report that the European Central Bank will hold a meeting today amidst a series of uncertain and potentially conflicting economic trends. It is widely expected that the European Central Bank will once again lower the Benchmark Interest Rate tonight. Lafargue wrote in a note to clients, but what is more interesting is the broader context. He mentioned that the new plans to increase European defense spending will be closely related to the policy makers of the European Central Bank, who may be asked to provide support. He added that the impact of the upcoming U.S. tariffs on European goods is also an important issue. He said, ‘That being said, we expect the European Central Bank to retain some discretion and continue to rely on data for now.’
