On Tuesday night, California Governor Gavin Newsom warned that “American democracy is in danger” in a speech to Californians and accused Congress of bowing to U.S. President Donald Trump. “Democracy is under attack before our eyes, and the moment we fear has come,” he said. With a broken ball in hand, Trump swung it at the historic program of our Founding Fathers – three equal branches of independent government. There are no more checks and balances. “Congress is missing,” he added, “and House Speaker Johnson has completely abdicated that responsibility.” Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Mr. Johnson said Newsom, who had been an active critic of the Trump administration’s moves, should be “tarred and feathered.”
