Many people who manipulate others will describe or claim to be protectors. However, the person being manipulated or who believes they are being protected may sometimes become confused. I want to teach everyone a small way to identify this: if their intention is to allow you to safely choose your options, that is called protection. But the manipulator? They will consciously reduce the options in your life, which is called manipulation. For example, if I hire a bodyguard to protect me and I say I want to go shopping, the bodyguard says, "Go ahead, don't worry, I'm right here." If I want to go for a walk at night, he says, "No problem, whatever time, I'm right here, you can go for your walk." Therefore, you can feel assured; he increases your life options. However, if today there is a bodyguard who says, "I am your bodyguard," and you say, "I want to go out to eat," he replies, "Don't go in, it's dangerous." If you say you want to go out at night, he says, "Don't go out so late," this bodyguard proves that he cannot protect you. This is typical manipulation; he reduces the options in someone else's life. Thus, behind protection is your brave confrontation with the unavailable options, while behind manipulation is your restriction to only doing what I think is appropriate.
