Founder of Lens Protocol: The construction of the Social Web should focus on elasticity.
BlockBeats news, on August 25th, Stani Kulechov, the founder of Aave and Lens Protocol, posted a message saying that "given the recent arrest of Telegram CEO Pavel Durov, I have been reflecting on how to build a 'flexible' approach to maintain various rights, even if these rights (such as freedom of speech and content censorship) may create conflicting situations. First of all, when discussing flexible software, it is important to get rid of the concept of 'Decentralization'. 'Decentralization' is a term that is easily misunderstood and rarely achieves consensus. Instead, the construction of the Social Web should focus on flexibility. In fact, flexibility means minimizing any single point of failure that may disrupt or affect network functionality and integrity. This concept is easier to understand and measure. For example, today's most successful Decentralized Finance projects are built in this way. They are not necessarily aimed at achieving a certain level of decentralization, but rather to ensure that protocols like Aave can resist potential threats and single points of failure from various participants. A truly flexible Social Web is a system that is extremely difficult to be penetrated or disrupted by any single entity or entity alliance. Flexibility ensures that the participation of networks or protocols is guaranteed at all levels. Information flow is resilient to manipulation or biased censorship. Managers should be free from undue influence. Content should be able to resist operator deletion and be completely controlled by its author. Currently, Block chain technology provides a way to achieve flexibility. Essentially, the Block chain ensures access control (who can write) and secure storage of value (assets). It can determine who can publish in the information flow, join the community, review content, serve as a legitimate fact checker, and how to allocate funds in the network. In addition, it also enables a community-driven framework for selecting managers or fact checkers through a voting mechanism. Accountability and transparency are key to making flexibility effective. A transparent network is better able to ensure flexibility, and if privacy is needed, guarantees such as Zero-Knowledge Proof (ZK-proofs) can provide verifiability while ensuring transparency. Public Block chains have built-in these features. I believe that a truly flexible Social Web will open up new and interesting use cases, as developers will no longer have to worry about being shut down. These basic principles will guide the development of Lens V3.
