In trade policy, a “tariffs pause” is a temporary suspension of planned import taxes. In effect, the government hits the “pause” button on new or higher tariffs for a set period. For example, in April 2025 the U.S. announced a 90-day pause on additional tariffs (beyond a baseline rate) to give trading partners time to negotiate. Such a pause affects exporters, importers, manufacturers and consumers: businesses see more predictable costs and consumers may avoid sudden price spikes.
