Just came across something pretty wild about Elon Musk that most people probably don't know. The whole 'did Elon come from money' question has a surprisingly complicated answer, and the story his father tells versus what Elon actually says are basically opposite narratives.

So here's the thing - Errol Musk, Elon's dad, has this whole story about an emerald mine in Zambia back in the day. According to him, they had so much cash flowing around that they literally couldn't shut their safe. Like, bills would be sticking out everywhere, and they'd just grab handfuls and shove them in their pockets. He even talks about young Elon walking into Tiffany & Co. with raw emeralds, selling two for $2,000, then finding one of them marked up to $24,000 in a ring later. Pretty insane if true.

But here's where it gets interesting. Elon's version? Complete opposite story. He's said multiple times that there's zero evidence the emerald mine ever actually existed. No records, nobody's ever seen it, nothing. He claims his dad told him about owning a share in it, and he believed it for a while, but it never checked out.

According to Elon, he grew up middle-income, maybe upper-middle class at best, definitely not rolling in emerald money. His dad had an engineering business that did okay for a while, but things fell apart over the decades. Fast forward to now - Elon's literally supporting his father financially because Errol's fallen on hard times.

So did Elon come from money? Not really, at least not the way his father's stories suggest. The privilege was real but not in the way Errol describes. More importantly, whatever wealth situation existed back then didn't translate into inheritance or major financial gifts for Elon. He's built his empire - Tesla, SpaceX, all of it - from his own work, not family money.

It's honestly a fascinating case study in how two people can have completely different memories of the same family history. One painting this picture of overflowing wealth, the other basically saying it never happened and he had to make it on his own.
