I asked myself this question yesterday: how much money is there in the world? The answer turned out to be very interesting.

When calculated in US dollars, approximately $37 trillion is circulating worldwide. This includes physical cash and all money in bank accounts. But this is just the traditional monetary system. If we also include investment instruments, derivatives, and cryptocurrencies, the figure exceeds $1.2 quadrillion. A quite significant difference.

Looking at physical currencies—coins and banknotes—the answer to how much money is there in the world becomes a bit more tangible. Rough estimates suggest about $6.6 trillion. The remaining $30 trillion is in digital form, within the banking system.

Including bank deposits and liquid assets, the money supply is expressed in the tens of trillions. So, when you ask how much money is there in the world, the answer depends entirely on how you measure it.

So, what is our share? 🫣 Considering how much money is involved and why most people around the world still face financial difficulties, the distribution of wealth is just as important as the amount itself. Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies can also be seen as alternatives to this system. If we look to the future, perhaps this distribution will change as well.
