CrowdStrike Partners with SGNL to Combat AI Era, Identity Security Defense Becomes New Battleground

Recently, leading cybersecurity company CrowdStrike announced a strategically significant acquisition—purchasing identity management startup SGNL for nearly $740 million. This move is not an isolated event but reflects a core shift across the industry: in an era where AI-driven cyberattacks are becoming increasingly sophisticated, identity defense has become a critical component of corporate security.

Identity Management Becomes a New Security Frontier

According to CrowdStrike’s public statements, this acquisition will enhance the capabilities of its core Falcon cloud security platform, helping users better respond to human and AI-initiated access requests and real-time security risks. The deal is expected to close in the first quarter of fiscal year 2027.

Data shows that identity management has become an essential part of CrowdStrike’s business. By the end of Q2, revenue from this segment reached $435 million and continues to grow. SGNL founders Scott Kritz and Erik Gustafson both previously worked at Google. Founded in 2021, SGNL secured $30 million in funding this February, backed by Cisco Investments and Microsoft Venture Fund.

CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz stated that this deal will solidify the company’s leadership in the multi-billion-dollar identity management market. He emphasized that the core of the company’s M&A strategy is acquiring excellent teams and innovative technology, rather than outdated tools—“We aim to deliver maximum value to our customers by integrating security services into the CrowdStrike platform, reducing the number of vendors, lowering system complexity and costs, and more effectively preventing security vulnerabilities.”

AI Elevates Cyberattack Complexity, Defense Becomes Urgent

With advancements in AI technology, cyberattack methods are evolving rapidly. Identity management has become one of the main entry points for cyberattacks. Over the past year, targeted attacks on Microsoft’s collaboration tool SharePoint have occurred, and AI-led cyberattacks have been documented, such as the first detailed incident involving Anthropic, a startup specializing in large language models. These events highlight the urgent need for stronger identity defenses to meet security challenges in the AI era.

M&A Wave in Cybersecurity Accelerates, Market Landscape Reshapes

CrowdStrike’s move is not an isolated case but part of a broader trend in the cybersecurity industry. Over the past year, a wave of mergers and acquisitions has been underway, aimed at strengthening product portfolios and market competitiveness.

Notably, Palo Alto Networks made a major move—under CEO Nikesh Arora, the company spent $25 billion to acquire Israeli cybersecurity startup CyberArk, marking a significant strategic investment. Meanwhile, Google acquired cloud security startup Wiz for $32 billion, further expanding its cybersecurity footprint.

CrowdStrike also continues its M&A efforts, announcing plans to acquire AI security platform Pangea and Spanish data services startup Onum by 2025. These acquisitions reflect a clear industry trend: companies are integrating top-tier innovative teams and cutting-edge technologies to build more comprehensive product ecosystems.

AI-Driven Security Solutions as the New Direction

Looking ahead, major companies are increasingly adopting AI solutions driven by autonomous agents to manage their cybersecurity tools. This marks a shift from passive defense to proactive protection. Kurtz’s remarks confirm this trend—companies are no longer simply purchasing isolated tools but need an integrated, efficient, AI-powered security platform for unified management.

Through this series of acquisitions, CrowdStrike is building a more complete security ecosystem. The integration of identity management, AI protection, and data services will enable enterprise clients to better respond to the growing complexity of security threats.
