According to a report by The New York Times on the 20th, hundreds of U.S. military personnel have been evacuated from Udeid Air Base in Qatar. The report cited officials from the Pentagon who said that personnel have also been withdrawn from multiple bases of the U.S. Fifth Fleet in Bahrain. Currently, U.S. troops are still stationed at bases in Iraq, Syria, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and the United Arab Emirates. Catherine Thompson, a senior researcher at the Cato Institute, said that this appears to be preparations for a more prolonged conflict, and that the Pentagon seems to “anticipate that Iran’s response could pose significant risks to U.S. military bases in the region.” The report stated that the Pentagon believes the war could last more than 12 days.
