Media reports indicate that OpenAI currently has over 200 employees developing a range of AI-powered devices, including a smart speaker and potentially smart glasses and smart desk lamps.

It is reported that the smart speaker will be OpenAI’s first hardware product, with an expected price between $200 and $300. The news cites two insiders saying that the speaker may not ship until after February 2027 at the earliest. The report states that this speaker will be equipped with a camera capable of capturing information about the user and their surroundings.

This capability includes recognizing objects on nearby desks and identifying ongoing conversations around the speaker. The camera will also support facial recognition features similar to Apple’s Face ID, allowing users to verify purchases through facial recognition.

It is reported that mass production of the smart glasses may not be feasible until 2028. As for the smart desk lamp, although prototypes have been created, it is currently unclear whether it will actually be brought to market.

OpenAI previously acquired the startup io Products, founded by former Apple designer Jony Ive, for $6.5 billion, marking its official entry into the hardware industry, aiming to capitalize on the growing demand for physical AI and augmented reality. Ive is widely regarded as a key figure in Apple’s design aesthetic, having contributed to nearly all major Apple products since joining the company in the 1990s until his departure in 2019.

Previously, Facebook’s parent company Meta achieved strong success with its Ray-Ban smart glasses. This product allows users to record and take photos via a miniature camera and stream content live. Reports indicate that Apple and Google are also developing their own smart glasses products.
