European Parliament Member: The era of the U.S. President arbitrarily imposing tariffs may be coming to an end

European Parliament International Trade Committee Chair Bernd Lange posted on social media on the 20th that the U.S. Supreme Court has set up a “legal barrier,” and the era of the U.S. President “unlimited and arbitrary imposition of tariffs” may be coming to an end.

Lange said that the Supreme Court’s latest ruling on tariff policy “sends a positive signal for the rule of law,” showing that “even the U.S. President cannot override the law.”

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that morning with a 6-3 decision, determining that the U.S. International Emergency Economic Powers Act does not authorize the President to impose large-scale tariffs.

Lange stated that Europe “must carefully assess the ruling and its consequences.” He said he had just held an emergency meeting with members of the European Parliament-U.S. trade agreement negotiation team to evaluate the potential impact of this ruling on the ongoing work in the European Parliament. According to the previous plan, the European Parliament International Trade Committee is scheduled to hold a meeting on the 23rd and 24th to vote on legislative proposals related to the implementation of the U.S.-EU trade agreement.

Last July, EU Commission President von der Leyen and U.S. President Trump announced that a new trade agreement had been reached between the U.S. and the EU, with core provisions including the EU suspending tariffs on all U.S. industrial goods and establishing tariff quotas for many U.S. agricultural and food products entering the EU market, in exchange for the U.S. imposing a 15% tariff on most EU exports to the U.S.
