There is an interesting project on the Sui chain called Walrus, which addresses a very practical problem—how to protect privacy and securely store data within Web3.

From a technical perspective, Walrus uses erasure coding to split files into fragments, which are then dispersed across nodes worldwide for storage. The advantage of this approach is that even if some nodes go offline, data can still be fully recovered. It is cost-effective, highly reliable, and resistant to censorship. For dApp developers and enterprises, this adds an extra layer of trust beyond traditional cloud services.

At the ecosystem level, the WAL token is the central hub for the entire system's operation. Users use it to pay for privacy transactions and storage fees, but that's not all—token holders can also participate in governance voting and have a say in protocol upgrade proposals. More importantly, staking WAL to maintain network security can earn rewards. This design aligns user interests with the long-term development of the project.

As the Sui ecosystem develops, infrastructure projects like Walrus that focus on user data sovereignty will become increasingly important. It not only fills the gaps of traditional blockchains in privacy and storage but also provides a trusted, decentralized alternative for the entire ecosystem.

The logic of erasure coding distributed storage is actually the Web3 version of RAID, but it indeed addresses the pain points.

The trick of erasure coding distributed storage is indeed powerful, much more reliable than centralized cloud services.

The technique of erasure coding and distributed storage is indeed brilliant, but I wonder if it will experience lag when used on a large scale.
