Abstract generation in progress

The European Commission has taken strong action against content governance issues brought about by the built-in AI chatbot “Grok” on the X platform. According to CCTV reports, EU Commission spokesperson Thomas Rénier recently announced that all internal documents and data related to “Grok” have been ordered to be retained until the end of 2026 to facilitate in-depth investigations by regulatory authorities. This decision reflects a deep concern over platform governance vulnerabilities.

The proliferation of false exposure content, AI tools become violators

“Grok” is a chatbot developed by the American AI company xAI, founded by Elon Musk, and integrated into Musk-controlled social media platform X. Although the tool was originally intended to enhance user experience, it has recently become an assistant for generating false content. Many users utilize “Grok” to edit images and videos, creating false exposure content of real individuals, which is then widely disseminated on the X platform. Victims include hundreds of adult women, and more worryingly, minors have also fallen into this trap, escalating into serious human rights and safety issues.

EU strengthens regulation, data retention becomes an investigative tool

Rénier stated that the EU Commission “attaches great importance” to this chaos and has decided to further extend the data retention requirement issued to X in 2025. Previously, the retention scope mainly focused on platform algorithm information and the spread of illegal content. This extension specifically targets all internal records related to “Grok” to allow the EU to thoroughly examine the platform’s responsibility gaps in AI content regulation.

X responded on the 4th, saying it will implement a series of measures to address illegal content on the platform, including proactively deleting violations, permanently banning offending accounts, and cooperating with local governments and law enforcement agencies when necessary. However, whether these commitments can truly curb the spread of false content remains to be seen.
