I've heard about participating in testnets so many times, but most of them end up being worthless tokens. Strong performance is good, but the ecosystem is the key. Without applications, what's the point? Infrastructure projects like these are indeed easy to overlook, but they can also be easily buried. There's a significant gambling element involved. But since you're willing to participate now, you should be prepared for the possibility of getting wrecked.
