JAN3 CEO criticizes Bitcoin's quantum security proposal as too hasty: reckless upgrades may trigger computational attack risks
Deep Tide TechFlow message, April 05, JAN3 CEO Samson Mow posted on X that the response to the quantum computing (QC) threat around Bitcoin should not be rushed; if an eager and blind switch from the existing signature scheme to a post-quantum (PQ)方案 is carried out, it could instead expose Bitcoin in the short term to the risk of traditional computing attacks (classical computing attacks). The PQ signature size may increase by 10 to 125 times, which would significantly reduce network throughput and could even trigger a repeat of the block-size scaling debate similar to the “block wars” from years ago. In addition, Samson Mow warned that some PQ schemes may involve potential backdoor risks. The quantum computing threat is still in the mid-to-long-term phase (or may require 10 to 20 years); the more reasonable path now is continued research rather than a rushed rollout. He also specifically called out Coinbase, saying its wallets have quantum-attack exposure due to address reuse, and recommended prioritizing fixes to the related infrastructure issues.
