5 Alternatives to MetaMask for Accessing DeFi Web3 Wallets

With the continuous development of the Web3 ecosystem, an increasing number of alternative wallets are available to access DeFi applications. Although MetaMask remains one of the most popular choices, it also has some limitations, such as security risks related to storing private keys in the browser and reliance on Infura. This article will introduce five Web3 wallets that can serve as alternatives to MetaMask, all of which support multi-chain interactions and provide users with more choices.

Frame

Frame is an Ethereum wallet that focuses on privacy protection, and it can run on MacOS, Windows, and Linux systems. It allows users to manage all their accounts, tokens, and projects, and can connect to any dApp. One of Frame's key features is that it stores private keys outside of the browser while supporting mainstream hardware wallets.

Users only need to download the Frame Wallet and install the browser extension to seamlessly trade on EVM-compatible chains such as Ethereum, Optimism, Arbitrum, Polygon, and xDai.

Rabby

Rabby is an open-source Web3 wallet developed by DeBank, a DeFi portfolio tracking tool. It automatically switches to the corresponding blockchain based on the websites visited by the user, providing a smooth multi-chain experience.

To enhance security, Rabby will parse the transaction details in the transaction confirmation pop-up. When users confirm a transaction, the Wallet will clearly state the purpose of the transaction and display the estimated balance change. Additionally, Rabby has integrated a security engine that can check transaction risks before the user signs and issue warnings for potential vulnerabilities.

XDEFI Wallet

XDEFI is a cross-chain browser extension Wallet that natively supports THORChain, Ethereum, BSC, Polygon, and other EVM networks as well as Terra. Users can perform cross-chain transactions directly within the Wallet without the need for centralized intermediaries or custodial services.

XDEFI also supports purchasing cryptocurrencies directly with fiat through Ramp. The wallet plans to support more blockchains such as Avalanche, Cosmos, Fantom, and Solana in the first quarter of 2022. However, XDEFI has not yet been open-sourced, which is a major drawback.

Web3Auth

Web3Auth(, formerly known as Torus), is an open-source browser extension that allows users to authenticate their identity with dApps, exchanges, or blockchains using their Google account. Users can log in to their Google account with just one click, automatically signing into the built-in Wallet in the browser without needing to remember their mnemonic phrases.

Web3Auth creates an account automatically during the first authentication, combining the security and convenience of self-custody. It is based on a secondary development of MetaMask, integrating tKey technology, which uses Shamir's secret sharing to split the private key into three parts for storage; as long as you can access any two parts, you can recover the private key.

Wallet 3

Wallet 3 is an open-source non-custodial wallet that can connect to DeFi applications via the WalletConnect protocol. When users access DeFi applications that support WalletConnect, they only need to copy the connection URI. If Wallet 3 is in an active state and manual connection is enabled, it can automatically connect to the application.

The features of Wallet 3 include quick account switching, cross-chain transfers, and direct interaction with top DeFi protocols such as Aave and Yearn. Additionally, it provides users with a portfolio dashboard that supports multiple networks including Ethereum, BSC, Polygon, Avalanche, and Fantom.

Overall, these alternative wallets each have their own characteristics, providing users with a more diverse selection. Users can choose the most suitable Web3 wallet to access the Decentralized Finance ecosystem based on their own needs.
