Received too many scam calls?

If you've ever received a fraudulent phone call, or even received them so frequently that you find it bothersome to even glance at the screen or hang up, then this AI chatbot from UK telecoms company Virgin Media O2 may be a breath of fresh air.

The AI chatbot launched by Virgin Media O2 is called 'Daisy', which, as the name suggests, is an AI based on the prototype of a grandmother. When scammers make phone calls, Daisy will answer immediately, convert the scammer's words into text, search the built-in database, generate a response that sounds natural and 'human-like', and finally send it back to the caller in voice form.

Can chat endlessly with the fraud group

As we all know, when fraud groups engage in telephone scams, their targets are often the elderly population who are more likely to answer the phone at home and fall for the content of the call.

Aiming at this point, Virgin Media O2 sets 'Daisy Grandma' as a kind and amiable grandma who is curious about everything and often chats with a touch of humor, making the other party mistakenly think that they have encountered a gentle and easy-to-be-fooled elderly person.

And then comes the highlight, "Grandma Daisy" speaks very slowly, not only the conversation is trivial and lengthy, but also does not reveal any sensitive information, emphasizing that she has plenty of time.

According to statistics, since the launch of "AI Grandma", she has successfully answered over 1,000 scam calls, wasting hundreds of hours of scammers' time, and even having conversations with some scammers for over 40 minutes.

O2's Marketing Director, Valcasel, said that the power of artificial intelligence lies in being able to have 'infinite chat'. If scammers think they can cheat Daisy Grandma out of her money over the phone, then Daisy Grandma will use her time to exhaust the scammer's patience.

AI Grandma fights against fraud

And Daisy's grandma's role is not only limited to this. When dealing with scammers, the chat content will also be analyzed by algorithms and provided to the police to help them understand the common methods of the fraud group, further cracking down on illegal activities.

In addition, Virgin Media O2 deliberately put Daisy's number on the "sucker list," a type of phone list designed to target UK consumers, in an attempt to attract more scammers. This strategy, known as "number seeding," aims to keep scammers "busy and occupied."

Of course, Grandma Daisy is just an interesting use case of AI in fraud prevention. At this stage, we can see the presence of AI in various aspects such as automatic identification of incoming calls and verification of forged messages.

More and more technology companies are also investing in the research and development of anti-fraud technology. In the future, perhaps we can look forward to more "AI partners" like Daisy, making contributions to the security of society.
