Yu Hao Charity Foundation's "Lighthouse Classroom" Launches in Chengdu to Build a New Path for Industry-Academia-Research Collaborative Education
On March 31st, the third session of the “Lighthouse Classroom” under the “Lighthouse Program” initiated by the Yuhao Charity Foundation was held at Tianfu No.7 Middle School in Chengdu, Sichuan Province. At a time when China’s space industry is thriving, the foundation themed the event “Going to the Farthest Places,” inviting Assistant Professor and PhD Supervisor Cheng Bin from Tsinghua University’s School of Aerospace Engineering, along with audio-visual technology instructor Kan Ziting from ZuiMi INNIX, to create a space-themed classroom connecting “academic frontiers” with “industry frontlines” for students.
As a public welfare project focused on cultivating innovative talents at the high school level, the “Lighthouse Classroom” emphasizes broadening students’ horizons and developing their thinking skills. Using an interactive public welfare classroom format, it invites experts and scholars from fields such as science education and humanities and social sciences to enter campuses. The project aims to illuminate a broader future for students through a single class, continuously exploring effective ways for social forces to participate in foundational education and talent cultivation.
01 Industry-Academia-Research Collaboration to Build Space Dreams
During the classroom sharing, Cheng Bin, Assistant Professor at Tsinghua University’s School of Aerospace Engineering, introduced the topic “When an Asteroid Approaches, How Do We Stand Up and Respond?” to systematically explain the risks of asteroid impacts and the latest advances in planetary defense.
Cheng Bin started with the “Risk of Asteroid Impact in 2032,” reviewing typical cases from the extinction of dinosaurs to the Chelyabinsk meteor explosion, helping students develop concrete awareness of asteroid threats. He also highlighted the national planetary defense program, inspiring students’ enthusiasm and sense of mission for space science. “What we study is not just an asteroid, but whether humanity can gain the initiative in the face of the unknown.” Cheng Bin turned the grand theme of deep space exploration into tangible scientific questions, helping students understand the significance of basic research for humanity’s future.
From the industry front, audio-visual technology instructor Kan Ziting focused on visual presentation and voice interaction systems in aerospace applications. Using crewed spacecraft as a simulated scenario, she demonstrated how Micro LED giant screens deliver precise images under extreme lighting conditions, and how AI voice interaction systems achieve accurate command recognition in noisy environments, guiding students to explore real-world industry issues.
In the interactive segment, when asked questions like “How to defend against asteroid impacts on Earth” and “Can gravity be used for deflection,” Cheng Bin responded one by one: early detection and precise prediction of asteroid landing points are key; defense methods such as kinetic impact, laser elimination, and gravitational tug each have their applicable scenarios. He also encouraged students: “The questions you raise are very valuable; space research needs young people who dare to think.” Additionally, Kan Ziting shared her own experiences, emphasizing that technology and science are not distant, and many everyday technologies are closely related to space exploration.
In this session of the Lighthouse Classroom, the two instructors transformed academic accumulation and technological practice into perceptible wisdom for students from different perspectives, making the grand theme of deep space exploration concrete and vivid in the classroom. One student remarked afterward, “I used to think space was very far from me, but today I realized that many technologies are right around us. I want to explore more unknowns too.”
02 Classroom Upgrades, Building New Paths for Innovative Talent Development
The Yuhao Charity Foundation’s “Lighthouse Classroom” has undergone a comprehensive upgrade in both content and format, aiming to establish a new model of industry-academia-research collaborative education.
In terms of content, this session expanded from humanistic reflection to technological exploration, extending to the frontier question “How does humanity explore the unknown”; in format, it was the first time that professors from Tsinghua University and frontline engineers co-taught, bringing scientific frontiers and industry practices into the campus simultaneously. This helped students deeply understand “how scientific questions are posed” and “how technologies are realized,” aiding them in building a complete cognitive chain from basic research to practical application.
The significance of the Lighthouse is not in its height, but in the distance it illuminates. This upgrade embodies that philosophy—by adopting a “simultaneous industry-academia-research” teaching model, students can directly interact with top scholars and frontline engineers, forming concrete understanding of scientific research and technological exploration, and lighting the lighthouse of their future dreams. Through this approach, the Yuhao Charity Foundation effectively integrates support from social celebrities, university intellects, and corporate technological resources, creating a seamless chain of “research—education—society,” providing a replicable and sustainable model for educational public welfare innovation.
03 Continued Deepening of Public Welfare Layout, Injecting Momentum into Talent Cultivation
Since its launch in November last year, the Yuhao Charity Foundation’s “Lighthouse Program” has adopted a dual-track approach of “classroom + laboratory,” strengthening students’ technological practice abilities while also cultivating humanities and social sciences literacy. Currently, the program has expanded from eastern regions to central and western China, reaching over 6,000 participants. In the future, it will be implemented in cities like Changsha and Hangzhou, bringing interactive public welfare classrooms to more students. This initiative not only provides systematic growth support from knowledge to skills, and from technology to ideas, but also explores effective ways for multiple forces to deeply participate in foundational education talent development.
According to relevant officials, the future of the Yuhao Charity Foundation’s “Lighthouse Program” will continue to deepen the “practical empowerment + ideological guidance” dual-driven model, collaborating with more renowned teachers, corporate technical experts, and university educators to cultivate young talents with both innovative ability and scientific spirit, injecting youthful energy into China’s technological development and modernization.
