AI data centers exacerbate power shortages, institutions are optimistic about the demand cycle for gas turbines, Wanze Co., Ltd. hits the daily limit.
Ask AI · Why have gas turbines become the preferred solution for power shortages in AI data centers?
On April 1st, early trading saw a rebound in gas turbine concepts, with Wanze Co., Ltd. (000534.SZ) hitting the daily limit, Dongfang Electric (600875.SH) approaching the limit, and Feiwo Technology (301232.SZ), Yingliu Co., Ltd. (603308.SH), Jereh Group (002353.SZ), Tunan Co., Ltd. (300855.SZ) following suit.
In terms of news, on March 30th, Jereh Group announced that its wholly-owned subsidiary GPS signed a gas turbine generator set sales contract with a U.S. client, with a contract value of $341 million (approximately 2.36B RMB), accounting for 17.66% of the company’s audited operating revenue in 2024.
With the explosion of AI computing power and the widening gap in U.S. electricity supply, power demand has surged. CSP manufacturers are building their own power sources, with gas turbines as the first choice, followed by solar storage. Chinese companies will benefit from the high prosperity of U.S. power infrastructure development.
According to a report by the International Energy Agency, by 2030, the global data center electricity demand will reach approximately 945 terawatt-hours. As demand continues to grow, supply-side tensions become more prominent. Gas turbines, with their quick response, high power adaptability, lower generation costs, and high reliability, have become the primary power source solution for AIDC.
CITIC Construction Investment’s research report states that power shortages remain the main theme throughout the year, and they remain optimistic about the gas turbine industry chain. According to CITIC Construction Investment’s estimates, global demand for gas turbines will exceed 120 GW by 2028, with an expected global supply of about 90 GW, and the gap continuing to widen. They remain bullish on the gas turbine industry chain and trends such as ship-based gas turbine conversions.
