So I was looking into Kangal dogs and honestly these things are absolute units. Like, we're talking 28 to 34 inches tall for males and a kangal weight that can hit anywhere from 90 to 150 pounds depending on whether it's male or female. That's legitimately massive for a dog breed.
Apparently they were originally bred in Turkey to guard livestock and scare off wolves and bears, which explains why they needed to be so huge and intimidating. Males tend to be heavier, around 110 to 145 pounds, while females are a bit smaller at 90 to 130 pounds. Pretty wild how much variation there is even within the breed.
What's interesting is that Kangals don't actually reach their full size until they're like 2 to 3 years old, even though they're technically mature at around 18 months. And if you're thinking about getting one, their kangal weight management is pretty important - you need to feed them quality food with the right balance of protein and nutrients. A vet told me that large-breed specific dog food works better for them.
One thing people often mix up is Kangals vs Anatolian shepherds. They look similar since they both come from Turkish herding dogs, but apparently they're genetically different. Kangals are typically bigger, faster, and live longer (12-15 years vs 10-13 years). Plus purebred Kangals have that specific tan or brown coat with a black mask, whereas Anatolian shepherds come in different colors.
They're not really apartment dogs though - need a lot of space and exercise. But if you've got the room and proper training, they're supposed to be incredibly loyal and protective. Definitely not a breed to mess around with though, they've got serious strength.
