ByteDance-owned TikTok announced it will invest €1 billion (about HK$9.14 billion) to build a second data center in Finland.

In May last year, TikTok said it would invest €1 billion to build a data center in Kouvola, Finland. This time, the data center will be located in southern Finland in Lahti, with an initial capacity of 50 megawatts (MW) and a total potential capacity of 128 megawatts. It is expected to create local jobs and promote the development of the digital ecosystem, among other benefits. The two data centers are expected to begin operations later this year and next year, respectively.

TikTok said that both investments in Finland are part of the “Clover” program, which has a total investment scale of €12 billion. Under the program, data center projects will be built in Europe, with the aim of being part of a European data sovereignty program with industry-leading protection, to serve more than 200 million European users.
