Ordinary heroes top the trending searches, but only by implementing rewards can good people be truly rewarded and their good deeds no longer just a wish.
In early November, a warm and powerful wave of social positive energy swept across the internet.
On November 4, the topic “Extraordinary Touches of Feeling in Ordinary Jobs” climbed to the top of social platform hot-topic charts, with more than 12 million views; the next day, “Salute Those City Heroes” once again topped the trending search list, with more than 25 million views. Beneath the topics, multiple heartwarming moments from ordinary workers continued to dominate the screen. With their own actions, they interpreted “greatness in the ordinary,” sparking likes and resonance from tens of millions of netizens.
Among these moments, many are worth remembering. Jiangsu nurse Gao Yunxian, while at a scenic spot and hearing cries for help, rushed forward without hesitation. Using three cycles of cardiopulmonary resuscitation, she pulled a choking child back from the brink of death. In Chongqing, bus driver Jin the Boss bent down and carried an elderly passenger with mobility issues in the midst of heavy rainy traffic. In Kaifeng, Henan, food delivery rider Cui Yulong climbed the third-floor anti-theft net by hand and successfully rescued a trapped child. There are also Meituan riders who deliver medicine late at night; worrying about users’ safety, they patiently waited outside for more than 20 minutes, then returned to check the medicine’s effect at the pharmacy—moving tens of thousands of netizens……
In the context of the new era, the definition of “hero” is being reshaped. It is no longer an unreachable symbol, but rather ordinary workers everywhere—food delivery riders, bus drivers, community nurses, and others—who are close at hand and within reach. Millions of plays and likes on social networks are the public’s heartfelt tribute to the heroes in their midst, and they are also the most authentic and urgent reflection of “goodwill” in today’s society. It tells us: in this era, the strongest positive energy is coming from those everyday “beacons of light” who stand firm in their positions.
However, when faced with these moving stories, we cannot stop at being moved, liking, and reposting. To pay tribute to ordinary heroes, we need more than heartfelt emotion—we need action.
Every time the internet is flooded with screenshotted content, it surges like tidal waves, but the tide will eventually recede. If acts of kindness are limited to verbal praise and brief surges in popularity, how will those selfless workers be remembered in their hearts? This is the deepest call from social public opinion over the years: how do we ensure that “good people are rewarded for their goodness”?
The key to keeping the “beacons of light from ordinary people” flowing is for governments, society, and businesses to jointly build a comprehensive commendation mechanism—so that good deeds are seen, respected, and “good people are rewarded” becomes reality—thereby showcasing the warmth of society and the responsibility of enterprises.
Whether it is government honor awards such as “China’s Good People” or “Bainxing Lei Feng” or other types, or corporate commendations and bonus awards for good deeds by good people. This dual incentive of both material and spiritual support is the most direct recognition and encouragement for good deeds. It turns “good people are rewarded” from a beautiful wish into reality, ensuring that goodwill continues for the long term.
For example, Meituan held a commendation meeting for its leading riders on November 6. Meituan announced that it would upgrade two long-term initiatives: the “Rider Good Deeds Reward Plan” and the “Rider Acting Righteously Reward Plan.” It will specially commend “leading riders” who help bravely and have a strong sense of social responsibility; the commendation award can be up to 100k yuan. If there are major deeds officially recognized, additional incentives will also be provided.

That day, 13 “leading riders” from across the country who had stood up for righteousness and done good on the spot were invited to the scene. Among them was rider Yao Xinlong, who “worried that a customer might get into trouble and returned late at night to check the medicine’s effectiveness.” There was also rider Ru Xin ge, who “caught a thief and helped the store owner chase the thief.” And there was rider Meng Shixiang, who “bravely stepped in to stop a malicious close-quarters ramming while driving.”
These Meituan riders are the most ordinary workers in the city. They move through every street and alley, serving households everywhere. Yet they have not indulged in the ordinary. Instead, with a vigorous, upward-spirited heart and abundant moral sense, they have thrown themselves into helping others. These good deeds may not be dramatic or shocking, but their integrity, warm-heartedness, and dedication to their work deeply moved and warmed society in the most straightforward way.
To commend this group of brave people, we should not stop at cash rewards. We should provide comprehensive safeguards, so that with the shield of the system, riders have the “confidence” to act when it matters most.
At present, Meituan has already joined forces with professional emergency rescue, medical first aid, and vocational education institutions, among others, to provide long-term safety training for riders nationwide, helping riders master professional skills. When special situations arise, rider friends can not only save themselves, but also—within their ability—help others in a more professional way.
Meanwhile, starting on November 1, Meituan’s rider old-age insurance subsidy has officially expanded to cover the entire country. Meituan’s “Rider Major Illness Care Plan” has also covered all Meituan riders and their parents, spouses, and minor children. Meituan hopes that this will make riders’ work more relaxed, their income more stable, and their lives better protected—helping them become good helpers for community residents.
The massive scale of platform enterprises means their commendation efforts inherently have very strong persuasive power. Meituan’s actions will undoubtedly encourage more practitioners to take the initiative to fulfill social responsibility and consolidate the foundation of a better society.
It is important to note that the huge number of delivery riders are not only delivery people; they are also safety officers, information officers, and emergency responders who move through the city’s finest “capillaries.” Their electric bikes are “mobile Lei Feng service posts,” and the delivery boxes may contain first-aid kits. Their good deeds often fill in, first time around, the blind spots in urban public services and grassroots governance.
“Ordinary people’s small lights can still illuminate the entire galaxy.” Those moments that moved society are the warmest background color of the city. But maintaining and carrying forward this warmth requires joint efforts from the whole society. The government needs to keep improving relevant laws and regulations to ensure that the rights and interests of those who stand up for righteousness are not harmed. Media and the public should continue to pay attention and give likes, building a positive public opinion atmosphere. And platform enterprises, represented by Meituan, need to treat commendation mechanisms as part of the company’s long-term strategy—continuously deepening institutionalized guarantees for good deeds.
Only by making the commendation mechanism more complete—making “goodness” tangible and “warmth” something people can rely on—can every worker in an ordinary job position, while working with peace of mind, have the courage and confidence to embrace kindness. This is the most profound and longest-lasting tribute that our era can give to the “Extraordinary Touches of Feeling in Ordinary Jobs.”
