Rumor has it that Meta(META.US) will open-source the new generation AI model
Zhitong Finance APP learned that, according to reports, Meta (META.US) is preparing to roll out its first batch of new artificial intelligence (AI) models, led and developed by Alexandr Wang, and plans to ultimately provide multiple versions of these models in an open-source licensed form.
Insiders said that before the official release of the new models, Meta plans to retain some proprietary technology and ensure that these models do not introduce new security risks.
In June last year, Meta announced an investment of $14.3 billion in the AI startup Scale AI and obtained a 49% stake in it. As part of the investment, Scale AI co-founder and CEO Alexandr Wang will join Meta to lead its “Superintelligence” team focused on general artificial intelligence (AGI).
Reportedly, because the previous-generation Llama 4 series models have fallen behind competitors, Meta launched this new model series to help companies catch up with their rivals and hopes that future models will lead the industry. The report said that AI giants OpenAI and Anthropic have hinted that the next generation of models is about to be released.
Reportedly, Meta understands that its newly released models may not be able to compete with those companies’ new products in overall performance, but believes they will have advantages in certain aspects that appeal to consumers.
Wang previously said that some of the company’s latest large models will remain proprietary. The report noted that this signals that Meta is moving toward a hybrid strategy of open-source and closed-source.
