Wired reports that on March 12, according to the financial filings submitted by NVIDIA (NVDA.US) to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), NVIDIA will invest a total of $26 billion (about 175 billion yuan) over the next five years to fully advance the R&D of open-source AI large language models.

The report says that this major investment could transform NVIDIA from a chipmaker with a strong software stack into a cutting-edge lab capable of competing with OpenAI and DeepSeek. This is a strategic move that may further solidify NVIDIA’s position as the world’s leading AI chip manufacturer, because these models are tailored to the company’s hardware.

An open-source model refers to a model whose weights or parameters are publicly released. These weights or parameters determine the model’s behavior, and sometimes its architecture and training details are also published. This allows anyone to download and run the model on their own machine or on the cloud. In NVIDIA’s case, the company also disclosed the technological innovations involved in building and training its models, making it easier for startups and researchers to modify and build on the company’s innovations.
