Trump confirms removal of Bondi from office, Todd Blanche to serve as Acting U.S. Attorney General
In a post on his social media “Truth Social” on April 2 local time, U.S. President Donald Trump said that Pam Bondi served as attorney general in the past year and is about to move to a “much-needed and important new position” in the private sector, with further details to be released on a date to be chosen soon. At that time, Todd Blanche, the current deputy attorney general of the United States, will serve as acting attorney general.
Bondi became the second Cabinet member fired during Trump’s second presidential term.
It is understood that Trump’s dissatisfaction with Bondi has been ongoing for months, including the view that she mishandled the “Epstein files” and was not tough enough in cracking down on Trump’s political opponents. On March 17, the U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform issued a subpoena to Bondi, requiring her to appear for a closed-door congressional inquiry regarding the Epstein case. Under the terms of the subpoena, Bondi is scheduled to appear before the committee on April 14. Previously, Bondi had attended related hearings, but she failed to allay the doubts and criticisms from multiple lawmakers from both parties regarding the Department of Justice.
Bondi assumed the role of attorney general in February 2025. Before that, she was part of Trump’s legal team.
On March 5, Trump announced that another woman in the Cabinet, the controversial Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, would be reassigned to his post, and he nominated U.S. Senator Markwayne Mullin to replace her. The U.S. Senate has voted to confirm the nomination.
A nomination for attorney general also requires Senate confirmation. At present, Republican lawmakers hold a majority of seats in the Senate.
