Hey, I just found out that if your CNH has been expired for more than 30 days, you're at serious risk. I mean, there's a 30-day grace period after the expiration date, but many people don't know about it and keep driving normally. After that period? Heavy fine, R$ 293.47, plus 7 points on your CNH and vehicle retention. Too harsh.

What I found interesting is that there's a big difference if your CNH has been expired for more than 5 years. Then everything changes — it's not just renewing with a medical exam, you need to take a full Curso de Atualização because the Detran thinks you've been away from traffic changes for too long. Makes sense, actually.

The good news is that now most states allow online renewal, at least here in São Paulo, Rio, and Minas. It's straightforward: just confirm your data, pay the fee, do a medical exam, and in about 3 business days, your CNH Digital is ready. But, if your CNH has been expired for more than 5 years, this process gets a lot more complicated.

Oh, and there's one more detail: the validity of the new document depends on your age. If you're under 50, it’s valid for 10 years. Between 50 and 69? 5 years. And over 70? Only 3 years. So, if you're in that age range, you need to stay on top of renewals because they come up pretty often. Moral of the story: don’t let it expire, because dealing with it later gets really annoying.
