Zhipu CEO Zhang Peng responds to price hikes: Relying on low-price competition in the long term is not conducive to the development of the entire industry.

IT Home reported on March 27 that at today’s 2026 Zhongguancun Forum Annual Meeting, titled “OpenClaw and AI Open Source Roundtable,” Yang Zhilin, founder of Dark Side of the Moon, served as the host and engaged in dialogue with Zhang Peng, CEO of Zhiyu Huazhang, and Luo Fuli, head of Xiaomi’s MiMo large model.
Yang Zhilin mentioned the GLM-5-Turbo model recently released by Zhiyu and asked Zhang Peng why there was a price increase.
Zhang Peng replied, “It’s no longer just a simple matter of asking a question and getting an answer; the thought process and reasoning chain behind it can become quite lengthy. It will also interact with the underlying infrastructure through coding, continuously debugging and correcting its own errors. This means that the overall consumption will be very large; the amount of Tokens required to complete a task may be ten times or even a hundred times that of answering a simple question. Therefore, we have made some adjustments to the price, which is essentially a natural result of changes in costs.”
Zhang Peng also stated, “The model has become larger and more capable, and the corresponding service costs have also increased. So we hope to gradually bring it back to a normal commercial value range.”
Zhang Peng candidly said, “Long-term reliance on low-price competition is actually not conducive to the development of the entire industry. This is also an important consideration for us. We hope to create a healthier closed loop in the commercialization path through this approach, continuously optimizing model capabilities and providing better models and corresponding Token services in a more long-term and stable manner.”
When discussing his views on OpenClaw, Zhang Peng bluntly remarked, “The biggest breakthrough or the greatest ‘novelty’ this brings to everyone is that it is no longer just a tool exclusive to programmers or geeks; ordinary people can also easily utilize the capabilities of top models, especially in areas related to programming and intelligent agents.”
Zhang Peng expressed that, so far, he prefers to refer to OpenClaw as a kind of “scaffolding” when communicating with others. It provides a possibility: on top of the model capabilities, it has built a scaffolding that is solid enough, convenient enough, and flexible enough. Everyone can call upon various new capabilities provided by the underlying model according to their wishes. Many ideas that were previously limited by “not knowing how to write code” or “lacking other professional skills” can now be realized through very simple communication.
According to IT Home’s report in February this year, Zhiyu decided to make structural adjustments to the pricing system of the GLM Coding Plan package based on actual usage and resource investment changes. The first purchase discount has been canceled, while seasonal and annual subscription discounts remain; the package prices have undergone structural adjustments, with an overall increase starting from 30%; prices for existing subscribers will remain unchanged. Effective date: February 12, 2026.
