Which is safer: vision or perception? Are more LiDAR sensors better? Lantu and Wey executives share different opinions.

Phoenix Technology News, March 26 - Regarding the differences behind the use of LiDAR and pure vision solutions in smart driving routes, Lu Fang, chairman of Lantu Automotive Technology Co., Ltd., believes that

visual perception is “passive viewing,” relying on external conditions. Strong light, darkness, and heavy fog can blind it at any time. In contrast, LiDAR is “active probing,” emitting light and receiving it back, measuring absolute physical distances. From an effectiveness standpoint, the “probabilities” calculated by algorithms ultimately cannot replace the “truth” measured by LiDAR. Single or dual LiDAR still have perception blind spots; the 360-degree “God’s view” provided by four LiDARs is what truly ensures user safety.

Lu Fang stated that having more LiDARs does indeed increase costs, but safety has never been a question of “cost,” but rather a mandatory question of “life.” Four LiDARs are currently the most responsible optimal solution for user safety.

However, Great Wall Motor’s WEY brand CEO Zhao Yongpo stated in a video yesterday that having more LiDARs does not necessarily improve the experience. From a user psychology perspective, vehicles with multiple LiDARs seem to have an advantage; this design intent is to create a competitive edge in consumers’ minds to achieve victory.

Yet, the advanced driver-assistance systems may not always require four or three LiDARs, and it forces users to pay for two unnecessary additional LiDARs. If misused, they could even produce adverse effects, which relates to the company’s vehicle manufacturing philosophy.

If the goal is merely to outperform users in the market, this quantitative approach may be the simplest path, but it is also irresponsible towards users.

Additionally, former CEO of autonomous driving technology company Waymo, John Krafcik, believes that Tesla’s insistence on a pure vision solution is completely unreliable, akin to someone with severe myopia.
