Meta | New AI Glasses Rumored to Delay European Union Launch Amid Battery Regulations and Supply Issues
Foreign reports quote sources as saying that due to regulations on batteries and artificial intelligence (AI), along with supply constraints, Meta’s plan to launch a new Meta Ray-Ban Display AI glasses with built-in screens in the European Union has been delayed.
The EU’s new rules require devices to have removable batteries, which increases manufacturing complexity and may shorten battery life. At the same time, Meta is also restricted by EU regulations on AI functionalities, which are a core selling point of these glasses.
Sources reveal that Meta hopes to launch the product in the EU but has been unable to secure enough supply. Coupled with local regulations on AI features and batteries, the product’s launch in the EU has been postponed. Currently, the product is only available in the United States.
According to EU regulations, by 2027, devices sold within the region must have removable batteries, posing a challenge for manufacturers aiming to integrate as many features and electronic components as possible. Built-in removable battery covers take up extra space, which could reduce battery life or force manufacturers to make other compromises.
Sources say Meta is in talks with the EU regarding battery regulations and is seeking exemptions for its own and other companies’ AI glasses.
Additionally, Meta stated in January this year that its Display glasses inventory was extremely limited. At that time, Meta paused plans to enter the UK, France, Italy, and Canada markets, focusing instead on fulfilling orders in the US.
