World Mobile to Roll Out Decentralized Wireless Mobile Technology After Successful Tests in Kenya, Mozambique, Nigeria

Decentralized wireless (DeWi) network operator, World Mobile, has announced the successful completion of field tests for its DeWi technology in Kenya, Mozambique, and Nigeria.

This achievement signifies a significant step forward for World Mobile bringing it closer to a comprehensive rollout of its DeWi technology across the African continent.

World Mobile, in its pursuit to provide affordable and reliable internet access to underserved rural areas, conducted tests in Kenya and Mozambique using TV white space equipment. This technology utilizes the unused spectrum within the TV broadcast band to deliver mobile network services.

In Nigeria, World Mobile utilized SpaceX’s satellite internet system, Starlink, during their field test. The company said that both TV white space and Starlink are complementary technologies that work together to enhance network coverage. By leveraging these technologies, World Mobile can make use of existing infrastructure and spectrum resources to expand their network reach and provide internet access to previously underserved areas.

Micky Watkins, the CEO of World Mobile, expressed satisfaction with the test results stating that they validate the feasibility and scalability of its DeWi technology. These successful tests bring World Mobile one step closer to its mission of providing affordable and reliable internet access to rural and underserved areas worldwide.

World Mobile’s recent announcement builds upon its previous achievement of launching a commercial network in Zanzibar in May 2023. In Zanzibar, World Mobile has deployed over 300 AirNodes which serve as access points providing wireless connectivity to a significant number of users.

With more than 16,000 users benefiting from the network on a daily basis, World Mobile demonstrates the impact of its network deployment and the growing demand for affordable and accessible internet services in the region.

World Mobile has ambitious plans to expand its network to additional countries in Africa and beyond. By extending its reach, the company aims to create a global community-owned wireless network.

World Mobile asserts that its DeWi solution offers connectivity at a lower cost compared to traditional mobile network operators. This affordability is a significant advantage, especially for rural areas in Africa and other regions. The company believes that its solution can facilitate the creation of a ‘sharing economy,’ which can be leveraged to finance the expansion of telecommunications infrastructure in underserved areas.
