A major gaming asset under ByteDance has been confirmed for sale. On March 20, Shanghai Mutong Technology Co., Ltd. (referred to as “Mutong Technology”) CEO Zhang Yunfan issued an internal letter announcing that the company recently signed an agreement with Savvy Games Group (referred to as “Savvy”), and both parties will complete the transaction within a certain period. After the transaction is completed, Mutong Technology will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Savvy.

Mutong Technology is a core asset in ByteDance’s gaming sector. In March 2021, ByteDance’s gaming brand Chao Xi Guang Nian acquired Mutong Technology. It was reported that the transaction was valued at approximately 4 billion USD at that time. After integrating into the ByteDance ecosystem, Mutong Technology’s business remained stable, with some blockbuster products achieving long-term operation.

However, since last year, there have been multiple reports that Mutong Technology might be sold. It is understood that ByteDance’s sale of Mutong Technology this time exceeds 6 billion USD, higher than the purchase price in 2021.

After the transaction, Mutong’s management structure will remain unchanged, and it will still be a Shanghai-based company. Zhang Yunfan will continue to serve as CEO of Mutong, leading the management team to drive the company’s development forward. Zhang Yunfan also mentioned that after the transaction, based on the company’s historical performance contributions, several incentive plans will be offered to employees, including accelerating the vesting and issuance of some long-term incentives granted in the past. Additionally, new attractive incentive schemes will be launched based on future performance.

Founded in 2014, Mutong Technology is headquartered in Shanghai, with branches in Singapore, Peru, Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia, and other locations. Since its inception, the company has focused on global game development. It has launched several popular mobile games overseas, making it one of the earliest Chinese companies dedicated to game exports and one of the Chinese game companies with the most overseas players.

According to the third-party agency Sensor Tower’s February 2026 global revenue ranking of Chinese mobile game publishers, Mutong Technology ranked 13th.

Mutong Technology’s core product is “Mobile Legends: Bang Bang,” launched in 2016. According to company disclosures, by the end of 2024, this product’s monthly active users exceeded 110 million, with a total global downloads surpassing 1.5 billion. Based on Sensor Tower data, in February this year, “Mobile Legends: Bang Bang” ranked fourth among Chinese mobile games exported overseas by download volume.

It is understood that Savvy is wholly owned by the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia. Prior to acquiring Mutong Technology, Savvy had participated multiple times in investments or acquisitions of domestic gaming companies.

Public information shows that in February 2023, Savvy announced an 1.8 billion RMB investment in the domestic esports company Hero Sports VSPO. In December 2024, Perfect World and its wholly owned subsidiary Shanghai Perfect World Software Co., Ltd. signed an asset purchase agreement with Scopely, Inc., a subsidiary of Savvy.
