The “Xi-Trump Meeting” was originally scheduled to take place at the end of this month, but due to the Iran war, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he has proposed to China to postpone the summit with President Xi Jinping by about a month.

Trump stated:

We are handling this matter, and we are communicating with China. I really want to go, but because of this war, I want to stay here.

I have to stay here, I feel. So we requested a delay of about a month, and I am also looking forward to meeting with them. Our relationship is very good, but because of the war — and there’s no tricks involved. Not saying “oh, I’m delaying” or anything like that. It’s simple. We are at war. I feel that I am very important here. So it might be slightly delayed, but not for long.

Earlier, there were reports that Trump indicated that if China did not help to restore shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, the scheduled summit with Xi Jinping might be postponed. Subsequently, U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen refuted the claim that the delay was to pressure Beijing into helping resolve the strait issue, stating that any possible postponement was due to scheduling conflicts and that the war currently occupies most of Trump’s attention. “So if the meeting is rescheduled for some reason, it’s also because of scheduling.”

The decision to postpone the summit may not disappoint Beijing. According to informed sources, China had previously suggested that Trump visit China at the end of April to allow more time for preparations.
