Breaking through pain points and obstacles in silver-haired consumer spending
How can AI and the supply side address the challenge of homogenization in senior-friendly products?
This year’s “Government Work Report” proposed to “actively develop senior human resources, formulate measures to promote high-quality development of the silver economy, and improve supporting policies for senior products, elderly finance, and retirement tourism.” Currently, with the rapidly growing elderly population, leveraging scenario innovation to stimulate consumption potential is a key focus for developing the silver economy.
In recent years, from basic pension to high-end health care, from community care to smart medical services, the scale of the senior consumption market has continued to expand. At the same time, seniors’ consumption concepts are undergoing profound changes—they are no longer satisfied with basic security but pursue healthier, leisure, and smarter lifestyles.
While the market is growing rapidly, development shortcomings and bottlenecks are becoming increasingly evident. Innovation on the supply side is lagging, with serious homogenization of senior-friendly products, making it difficult to meet the consumption expectations of the elderly. The consumer environment is not friendly enough, online payment processes are complex, and offline facilities lack senior-friendly features, preventing many seniors from enjoying convenient consumption. Additionally, scams targeting seniors, false advertising, and pension fraud continue to persist. To solve the pain points of senior consumption, new scenarios must be activated to create new demand, encouraging seniors to consume confidently and comfortably.
Strengthen policy guidance to lower consumption barriers. Local governments can introduce senior-friendly renovation subsidies tailored to local conditions, explore issuing senior consumption vouchers covering categories like senior travel and education, and consider including some rehabilitation aids and smart wearable devices in medical insurance or long-term care insurance reimbursement scopes to unleash consumption potential.
Promote supply-side innovation to make products truly senior-friendly. Meeting the consumption needs of the elderly requires providing precise, high-quality, accessible products and services. On the product side, develop easier-to-operate and more practical senior-friendly products. On the service side, promote innovation in retirement tourism, smart elderly care, and related fields. At the same time, strengthen the professional development of elderly care services, cultivate a team of elderly care professionals, and ensure seniors receive high-quality services.
Build a solid safety net and improve the consumption environment. Accelerate the development of standards and regulatory rules suitable for the silver economy, establish clear quality standards and service norms for senior-friendly products and elderly care services. Strengthen cross-departmental supervision, regularly investigate and rectify illegal fundraising and pension scams, and crack down on false advertising and consumer fraud.
