As regulatory steps targeting the cryptocurrency sector in ABD continue unabated, this time physical crypto ATMs are in the spotlight. The new bill introduced in Minnesota aims to completely ban crypto kiosks, citing that existing consumer protection measures are insufficient. If approved, physical devices in the state will be deactivated.

Officials supporting the bill argue that previous consumer protection measures have not yielded the expected results. In statements to lawmakers, it is noted that scams conducted through crypto kiosks have not been prevented. The new regulation proposes to directly repeal existing provisions rather than update them. However, the bill only covers physical kiosks. Residents of the state will still be able to conduct cryptocurrency transactions via online platforms.

Strict regulation of crypto ATMs in the US and worldwide
Minnesota is not the first region to take such a step. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker signed the Digital Asset Kiosk Act #DeepCreationCamp SB 2319( in August. This regulation requires kiosk operators to register and limits transaction fees to 18%. Additionally, a daily transaction limit of $2,500 has been set for new users.

A similar trend is also attracting attention globally. New Zealand decided to ban crypto ATMs in July 2025 as part of its anti-money laundering efforts. Authorities stated that the 157 devices in the country play a significant role in illegal fund movements. In Australia, after the number of kiosks increased from about 23 to nearly 2,000 over the past six years, officials are working on broader bans for “high-risk products.”

All these developments indicate that physical crypto access points are under regulatory pressure and that a tougher global era for crypto ATMs may be beginning.
