Deep Tide TechFlow News, February 22 — According to a post by U.S. President Trump on Truth Social, he announced that the global import tariff rate, which was implemented the previous day through an executive order, has been increased from 10% to 15% and will take effect immediately.

This move follows the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that Trump’s previous invocation of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to implement large-scale “reciprocal tariffs” and certain tariffs targeting fentanyl trafficking was unauthorized and unlawful, leading to the abolition of those tariffs. Trump then turned to Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974, which allows the President to impose temporary tariffs up to 15% on imports from all countries in cases of trade imbalance, for a maximum of 150 days (extensions require Congressional approval and have never been used before).

In his post, Trump stated that many countries have “taken advantage of the United States for decades” and indicated that in the coming months, he will identify and implement new “legal tariffs.” These tariffs apply to global imports (with some key goods such as energy and critical minerals possibly exempted), aiming to address trade deficits but potentially triggering global trade tensions, inflation pressures, and retaliatory tariffs.
