International Energy Agency: Energy Innovation Enters a New Stage Focused on Security

The International Energy Agency’s “Current Status of Energy Innovation” report released on the 17th states that energy innovation has entered a new stage focused on security, with energy storage technologies now at the forefront of global innovation activities. The report indicates that the global market for energy technologies has reached trillions of dollars and is becoming an innovation engine for fields such as batteries, transformers, turbines, motors, and heat exchangers. About one-tenth of all patents worldwide are related to energy, surpassing those in chemical, pharmaceutical, or transportation sectors, highlighting its central role in national security, industrial strategy, and economic performance. The report also mentions a survey of energy experts and practitioners showing that energy security has become the main driving force for energy innovation by 2025, with countries increasingly emphasizing strengthening domestic technological capabilities and safeguarding critical supply chains. According to the report, energy storage has become a leading area of global innovation activity. The share of battery-related patents among all energy patents is expected to further increase from the 40% baseline in 2023. (Xinhua News Agency)
