Trump states that Iran must reach a "meaningful agreement" with the United States

On the 19th local time, U.S. President Trump stated that Iran must reach a “meaningful agreement” with the United States, otherwise “bad things will happen.”

On that day, Trump delivered a speech at the first meeting of the so-called “Peace Committee” held by the U.S. Institute of Peace in Washington. He mentioned the U.S. airstrike on Iran’s nuclear facilities in June last year, saying that reaching a “meaningful agreement” with Iran is not easy, and reiterated that Iran cannot possess nuclear weapons.

The second round of indirect talks between the U.S. and Iran took place in Geneva, Switzerland, on the 17th. Afterward, both sides stated that despite remaining differences, the negotiations made progress compared to the previous round and agreed to continue engagement. On the 18th, the U.S. announced that although Trump has not yet made a final decision on whether to initiate military action against Iran, the U.S. military is prepared to strike Iran as early as this weekend.

Trump also said at the meeting that the U.S. will donate $10 billion to the “Peace Committee,” and Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, the UAE, Morocco, Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Uzbekistan, and Kuwait have pledged $7 billion to support the Gaza relief plan.

On January 22nd, Trump signed documents in Davos, Switzerland, with representatives from more than ten countries and regions to launch the so-called “Peace Committee,” with himself serving as chairman. He stated that the “Peace Committee” will first address the Gaza issue and then extend to “other conflicts.” The founding executive committee of the committee consists of seven members, mostly from the U.S.

Some public opinion suggests that the U.S. aims to create an institution parallel to the United Nations, which could further undermine the authority and functioning of the UN. Currently, few of the U.S.'s Western allies have openly accepted invitations to join.
