On February 5th, according to Intel’s announcement, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and Intel (INTC.US) announced the establishment of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology–Intel Joint Laboratory (hereinafter referred to as the “Joint Laboratory”). The laboratory will undertake a three-year research program focused on exploring high-efficiency near-memory computing architectures to address the performance and energy efficiency challenges of artificial intelligence applications. Through innovative hardware-software co-design, both parties aim to provide technical references for the future development of smart devices and sustainable artificial intelligence systems.

The Joint Laboratory will be led by Professor Yuen Yuen of the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, who also holds the Fung Chair in Engineering. The research will focus on technological challenges related to computing, memory, I/O bandwidth, and energy efficiency in smart devices.
