Dutch regulators ban Polymarket prediction market platform from operating in the country

Deep Tide TechFlow News, February 20th, according to Decrypt, the Dutch Gambling Authority (Ksa) has issued a penalty order to the operator of the prediction market platform Polymarket, Adventure One QSS Inc., requiring them to cease providing services in the Netherlands immediately. The regulatory agency states that prediction markets constitute “illegal gambling” activities under Dutch law. Failure to comply could result in a fine of €420,000 per week (approximately $462,000), with a maximum of €840,000 (approximately $924,000).

Ella Seijsener, supervisor of supervision and licensing at the Dutch Gambling Authority, said that prediction markets are becoming increasingly popular in the Netherlands, but such betting offered by these companies is absolutely not permitted in the Dutch market, even for licensed entities. The regulatory agency specifically pointed out that prediction markets pose “social risks,” such as potentially influencing elections.
