Recently, the Somnia Mainnet was officially launched, and its native Token $SOMI performed well on the Binance trading platform, starting at $0.7 with a maximum rise of 60%, peaking at $1.15. However, in the Crypto Assets field, price fluctuations on the first day of listing are not uncommon.
What is more noteworthy is the performance metric of 400,000 TPS (transactions per second) claimed by Somnia. Considering that Ethereum's TPS has long been around 15, and Solana can only reach about 3000 TPS, Somnia's claims are undoubtedly eye-catching.
In-depth study of Somnia's white paper reveals that it employs some innovative technologies. For instance, the MultiStream parallel processing mechanism breaks through the traditional blockchain model of processing transactions one by one, achieving multi-channel parallel processing. In addition, Somnia's self-developed IceDB is said to enhance data reading speeds by 15 to 100 times.
However, the most striking feature of Somnia is that it maintains compatibility with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) while pursuing high performance. Many blockchain projects that aim for high performance often choose to abandon EVM compatibility, making it difficult to gain the support of developers. Somnia attempts to strike a balance between performance and ecosystem by using a compiler to convert EVM bytecode into machine code, and whether this attempt will succeed remains to be seen.
The team behind Somnia comes from the British unicorn company Improbable, which has over a decade of experience in game technology, and its MSquared metaverse underlying technology is quite strong. However, game technology and public chain development are two different fields, and whether they can successfully transform will take time to verify.
Somnia's ambitious goals undoubtedly bring new expectations to the blockchain field, but whether its grand objectives can be achieved still needs further validation in practical applications.
