( Guiding Intent: Challenges and Prospects of Intelligent Web3 Interaction

In June, Paradigm's official website published an article titled "Intent-Based Architectures and Their Risks," bringing the concept of Intent to the public for the first time. Related protocols and infrastructure developed rapidly, becoming a hot topic in the crypto world at the ETHCC conference in July.

Intent is not a new concept. As Mindao, the founder of DForce, said, the crypto space has been extreme in abstracting and automating operations, from aggregators, centralized exchanges, contract wallets to cross-chain DeFi, and this work is being done by Chainlink, automated middleware, and the recent Telegram bots.

The intention is to bring new changes. In the past, product interaction was the core focus, while in the AGI era, human-machine interaction becomes the core. AI/LLM contains more potential for enhanced encrypted interaction.

Top-Down Anoma and Bottom-Up Unibot

In the past six months, related agreements, projects, and infrastructures have gradually emerged. Here, I will illustrate this with two typical cases.

The most notable is the Anoma Foundation, which completed a $25 million Series C financing round at the end of May 2023. In the context of severe homogenization in Layer 1, the Anoma Foundation has raised a total of $57.8 million through three rounds of financing, leveraging the intent-centric architecture Anoma (Dapp full-stack architecture) and Namada (privacy Layer 1), ranking seventh in terms of financing amount for Layer 1/Layer 2 that has not yet issued tokens.

Looking back at Anoma's speech at EthCC, founder Adrian Brink stated that Anoma's uniqueness lies in: all interactions begin with intent, and the intent expressed by users is processed through Anoma's black box architecture (also known as the magic box), enabling the core transaction process based on intent interaction.

  • User interaction: Users send transparent, private, or protected intentions to the Anoma black box architecture.
  • Intent collection and matching: The parser collects intents, performs balanced state transitions, and achieves counterparty matching.
  • Transaction Processing: Matched transactions are submitted to the crypto mempool, and validators send the blocks packaged by proposers to the execution layer, completing execution and verifying validity, and finally updating the state root.

The Anoma team has identified the underlying pain points of blockchain protocols, reviewing the evolution from Bitcoin's scriptable settlement to Ethereum's programmable settlement. They note that architectural limitations have resulted in current application protocols containing at least one Web2 component, which hinders counterparty discovery and resolution. They believe that the intent-centric Anoma architecture represents the third generation of Dapp architecture in the evolution of blockchain protocols, allowing users to define their desired outcome state and achieve efficient and customizable privacy transactions at the intent level.

Anoma, with high financing and a new technological architecture, is currently being built by a team of 37 interdisciplinary members from Heliax. After 2 years of development, Heliax has formed a complete innovative ecosystem:

  • Anoma: A general Dapp architecture centered around intent, which can be modularly deployed to L1, L1.5, and L2, embedding modular components for calls from various EVM frameworks.
  • Namada: A privacy settlement Layer 1 of the Anoma ecosystem, using a PoS mechanism for asset-agnostic interchain privacy, and will be compatible with Ethereum and IBC chains in the future.
  • AnomaVM: Simplifying DApp development on Anoma, using Juvix (an intent-centric programming language) and VampIR (a circuit programming language)
  • Typhon: The Typhon consensus based on the improved Tendermint of Cosmos
  • Taiga: Provides a composable privacy unified execution environment, defining three types of intents: transparent intent, masked intent, and privacy intent.

Although many institutions such as CMCC Global, Electric Capital, and Delphi Digital are optimistic about Anoma, believing that the intent-centric architecture has limitless potential for the future, the current top-down Anoma has only laid a good technical foundation and has yet to see exciting real-world applications.

On the other hand, the TG Bot has opened up the imaginative space for the implementation of Intent segmentation scenarios with on-chain automated trading tools.

Unibot is a Telegram-based trading bot )TG Bot( that allows users to perform automated DEX trading through Telegram, providing features such as sniper buying, copy trading, DEX limit orders, privacy, and anti-MEV. Unibot replaces the cumbersome interactions of Uniswap with Intent, offering a convenient DeFi experience. Unibot has also spawned a batch of TG Bot clones, and the current total market value of the TG Bot sector is approaching 200 million USD.

Top-down Anoma is innovation, while bottom-up TG Bot is transformation. Anoma starts from an intent-based underlying architecture, but the team's progress is slow; TG Bot, although it brings a new on-chain interaction interface to users, is not intelligent and has many security risks.

Both paths lead to the same destination, which is to simplify user interaction experience by introducing a new programmable and customizable user interface — User Intent Layer, allowing users to skip complex on-chain interactions and define transaction states based on intent.

AI is the new UI: Command Interaction vs Intent Interaction

The above two use cases give us a basic understanding of intent. Now let's explore the fundamental changes that AI brings to the underlying layer of the crypto world—transformations in user interaction interfaces.

The AI paradigm is introducing the third user interface paradigm in the history of computing, shifting towards a new interaction mechanism where users tell the computer what they want, rather than how to do it.

  • Paradigm One: Batch Processing
  • Paradigm Two: Command-Based Interaction Design
  • Paradigm 3: Intent-based Result Specifications

Every historical revolution in interaction models has produced new business models. LLM-based generative AI brings disruptive changes to human-computer interaction, directly transforming the original human-computer interaction with various software UIs into interaction with the Chatgpt chat window, which is an unprecedented experience. LLM+crypto introduces a new proposition of intention-based interaction to the crypto world, and LLM also has the potential to make blockchain interactions smarter by discovering and describing user intentions.

The Evolution of the Concept of Intent, Interaction Paradigms, Current Status, and Trends

After deeply understanding the trend of AI intelligence behind intentions, we further explore the evolution of the concept of intention. Intention is not a new concept; it has existed since the Web2 era. With the rise of search engines like Google, users can input their intentions, and the search engines provide relevant results to satisfy those intentions.

With the rise of e-commerce platforms like Amazon and eBay, there has been a significant shift in intent-based architecture, allowing users to express their intention to purchase products while the platform handles logistics. In early 2017, Gartner published a report titled "Innovation Insight: Intent-Based Networking Systems," officially introducing the concept of Intent-based Networking. The key aspect is to present users with an interface where they only need to express what they want, and the platform will take care of the business details.

Intent-based networking is the development trend of network automation and intelligence in the Web2 era. Gartner Research Vice President Andrew Lerner pointed out in 2017 that intent-based networking will be the next milestone in the field of networking.

In the evolution from Web2 to Web3, the concept of intent in Web3 is not clear, but there are some common understandings:

  • Paradigm Definition: Intents are a set of declarative constraints that allow users to delegate the creation of transactions to a specialized network of third-party participants while retaining full control over the process.
  • Anoma definition: Intent is a message sent by the user to express custom preferences, which is a constraint defining what the user-defined system can do, rather than a specific execution path.
  • Propellerheads Definition: The intention is the part of the transaction that requires assistance from others, simplifying complex transactions by outsourcing the difficult parts to a third party.

In practical use cases of intent-based transactions in Web3, users create intents off-chain, outsource to a parser off-chain, encapsulating the complexity of blockchain interactions while retaining full control over the process on-chain, thereby lowering the threshold for on-chain interactions.

The intention also brings the concept of LLM architecture - intent centric architecture. Currently, the crypto protocols and infrastructure related to intent centric are embedded in the interaction layer between users and Crypto, leveraging LLM to provide a better on-chain interaction experience.

LLM+Crypto brings a new paradigm of human-computer interaction, allowing users' intentions to be directly converted into smart contract calls. Users only need to express their intentions as they would with Apple's Siri, while robots/AI Agents/third-party parsers assist in completing complex on-chain operations. The future of intent-based Web3 interaction intelligence has the potential to significantly reduce the complexity of user interactions on-chain.

More and more Web3 projects are exploring the magic of intent. Whether it is intent-based Dapps or underlying architectures, they are unlocking the potential of intent from different perspectives. We attempt to organize this rapidly evolving field by categorizing it into four major categories from an interaction perspective, while also tracking the latest status and trends:

  1. Infrastructure (Intention-Centric Intent Architecture Layer):

    • DappOS
    • Flash 2.0 SUAVE
    • Anoma
    • Cow Protocol
  2. Supporting facilities (related to intent, related to account abstraction wallets):

    • ERC 4337
    • Account abstraction related supporting facilities: bundler infrastructure, wallet SDK
    • Intent-related supporting facilities: Juvix, Seaport, Gelato, okcontract, Delegatable, Hyper Oracle, symmio
  3. Enterprise Applications (Intent Infrastructure integrating Dapps, APIs, Modular Intent Layer, Domain-Specific Parsers):

    • Trading Parser API: PropelleHeads
    • Intent API: EnsoFinance
    • Intent Trading Infrastructure: Bob the Solver, Brink
    • Combinable Intent Tool: Essential
  4. Consumer Applications (smart interfaces for user interaction such as wallets, DEX, Web3 AI Agents, smart search engines):

    • Wallets: Safe, Bitconomy, Argent, Ambire, Sequence, Versa, A3SProtocol
    • DEX: CowSwap, Paraswap, Uniswap, 1inch, BananaHq, basedmarkets
    • Intelligent Frontend: Unibot, Dora, Web3 Analytics, kaito.ai

The intent-based architecture, supporting facilities, and enterprise-level applications attempt to solve the underlying challenges of intent realization, but infrastructure is not built overnight. The trend of intent consumer applications is what is truly exciting, as the evolution of interaction entry points such as wallets and DEX showcases the potential for intelligent interactions.

Wallet Intelligence: ERC-4337 introduces a new user intent layer )UserOps(, where users express their intentions, and packers convert these intentions into executable signed transactions. In recent months, the number of ERC4337 users has significantly increased, with ZeroDev, Biconomy, and Safe modular smart accounts being the most motivated to drive AA+intent, which has the potential to usher in the arrival of wallet intelligence )SCW(.

DEX Architecture Transformation: Intent Based Trading ) is designed to improve capital efficiency and user interaction experience. CoW Hooks connect complex actions such as trading, bridging, staking, deposits, etc., while UniswapX allows users to sign intent for off-chain matching and on-chain settlement. Similar to BananaHq, Brink, basedmarkets and other intent-based DEXs are gradually increasing, and the new Intent-based RFQ narrative ( SYMMIO ) is unfolding. As more DEXs and aggregators shift to intent-based architecture, the landscape of DEX is undergoing significant changes.

Intelligent Interaction Entry: Similar to the transformation of Web3 front-end interaction interfaces by TG Bot, interaction entry begins to focus on understanding user intent and systematically converting it into automated, actionable tasks. Not only TG Bot-like trading bots, but also Web3 AI Agents and Web3 intelligent search engines are making Web3 interactions more intelligent.
