Musk regrets public dispute with the president as the relationship between tech giants and the government draws attention again.
Public Dispute between Tech Tycoon and President: Regret and Possibility of Reconciliation
Famous entrepreneur in the tech industry, Elon Musk, recently stated that he regrets some of the social media remarks made against the U.S. President last week. This public dispute has led to a rift in what was once a close alliance.
This conflict has ended the close cooperation between both sides on government efficiency reforms, while raising market concerns about the prospects of Musk's companies. After the dispute broke out, the stock price of his electric vehicle company experienced the largest single-day drop in history, but has since gradually rebounded.
Musk admitted on social media: "Some posts about the president last week were a bit excessive, and I regret it."
The catalyst for the contradiction is Musk's opposition to a tax and spending plan supported by the president. In an interview, he criticized the proposal for undermining efforts for government efficiency reform and attacked it on social media for significantly increasing the budget deficit. The government promptly refuted this.
As of last Saturday, Musk appears to have deleted some posts that escalated the conflict, including an accusation involving the president's "document" relationship with a certain deceased individual, as well as a supportive reply to a user's comment calling for the impeachment of the president. The government had previously denied the related accusations.
In this dispute that unfolded simultaneously across different social media platforms, the president hinted at potentially terminating government contracts and subsidies granted to Musk's companies. However, this Monday, the president stated plans to retain the satellite internet service technology from Musk's company at the White House.
Analysts believe that Musk's apology is unlikely to fully bridge the gap between the two sides. Although the president stated, "I wish him all the best," he clearly refused to mend their relationship. The best period in their relationship was a few months before the president's second term, when Musk led a government efficiency reform project that attempted to significantly cut federal spending.
A technology analyst believes that the relationship between Musk and the president "may not be completely repairable, but could improve in the coming months." He pointed out that both sides have a need for cooperation, especially in key policy areas such as autonomous driving.
This conflict reveals the fragility of the relationship between the tech industry and the government. Since taking office, the current president has pressured several tech giants in various ways. While certain companies have found opportunities in specific areas, the government continues to closely monitor the development of the tech industry.
A law professor pointed out: "Tech giants have to accept the conditions of the current government." Although the current government has continued several antitrust investigations from its predecessor, the policy adjustments in AI regulation and the overall regulatory environment still provide some breathing space for the industry.
