Chinese internet service giant Tencent (Tencent Holdings) is reportedly considering a deal with major game development company Nexon (NEXON), including an acquisition. Bloomberg reported this on the 12th, citing multiple sources.
The reason for exploring deals is to strengthen Tencent's gaming business. Currently, Tencent is reportedly in contact with the family of the late Kim Jong-joo, co-founder of Nexon, to discuss the possibility of transactions such as acquisitions.
On the other hand, Mr. Kim's family, which is involved in Nexon's holdings, is consulting with advisors to consider their options, but sources say the outlook for the transaction is uncertain. It is currently unclear whether Tencent's considerations will lead to a deal.
Additionally, it has been reported that Tencent also explored the acquisition of Nexon in 2019. In the past, the two companies have collaborated.
Stock prices soar
Mr. Kim co-founded NXC Corporation in Korea in 1994 with Mr. Yu Jong-hyun. Subsequently, in December 2002, Nexon was established as a Japan subsidiary with a 100% investment ratio from NXC Corporation.
Nexon is a company listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market. It is widely known for developing popular games such as "MapleStory."
Last month, Nexpace, a subsidiary of Nexon, launched MapleStory N, a Web3 version of MapleStory, and is a company that is attracting attention in the crypto asset (virtual currency) space.
Nexon's stock price soared on private trading systems (PTS) following this news, rising over 12% at SBI Securities by the night of the 12th.
