From the octagonal cage to the presidential palace? Bitcoin is expected to pave the way for President McGregor's campaign.

On May 9, former UFC champion Conor McGregor announced on X his candidacy for the presidency of Ireland and proposed the establishment of a national Bitcoin reserve, stating that this could return control of currency back to the people, a claim that has attracted widespread public attention.

McGregor advocated for Ireland to establish a Bitcoin strategic reserve during a live stream, but did not specify the source of the funds or the costs. He emphasized that this initiative would empower ordinary people with economic discourse and expressed that the idea of handing power to the people directly hits at the core of Bitcoin's decentralization.

To promote the plan, McGregor actively contacted key figures in the cryptocurrency world, such as "The Pomp Podcast" host Anthony Pompliano and former Trump cryptocurrency advisor David Bailey, inviting them to participate in the X Spaces meeting to refine the details of the plan.

But it's not that easy! Ireland has to hold a general election on November 11, and the Bitcoin reserve proposal needs to be approved by both the legislature and the central bank, while also coordinating with the conflicting monetary policy of the Eurozone. For independent candidates, gaining the support of the coalition is even more challenging.

What makes things even more troublesome is that McGregor's campaign as an independent candidate is facing increased difficulties. He is not only dealing with the challenges of forming alliances, but the ongoing fallout from scandals such as his appeal in the sexual assault case and the investigation into hate speech may also directly lead to a massive loss of support from his voters.

In fact, McGregor has already made attempts in the cryptocurrency field, but with little success. At the beginning of April, the REAL token presale project he participated in was originally intended to raise $1 million, but ultimately only raised $392,300, and the project ended with refunds, indicating a clear failure of his celebrity effect.

Although McGregor promised to announce the schedule for the X Spaces conference, the specific time and list of participating experts have yet to be determined. It is worth noting that while countries like the United States and El Salvador have established government-led Bitcoin reserves, this grassroots initiative led by a presidential candidate is a first in Ireland.

In summary, it remains to be seen whether this politician with a background as a fighting star can gain voter support and take charge of financial policy. Additionally, the plan is still in its infancy, and its subsequent development is worth close attention from both the Irish political scene and the cryptocurrency community.
