Some Democrats switch sides to support the Senate's push to end the government shutdown.
[Some Democrats Switch Sides to Support Senate's Move to End Government Shutdown] After a group of moderate American Democrats broke party lines and voted to support the agreement to end this record-breaking government shutdown, the U.S. Senate took a key step toward reopening the government. On Sunday evening local time, the Senate passed a procedural motion by a vote of 60 to 40 to advance the bill. The Senate has not yet scheduled a final vote. The House of Representatives must also approve the plan before it can be sent to U.S. President Trump for signing. Under the agreement, Congress will provide full-year funding for the Department of Agriculture, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and Congress itself, while funding for other agencies will be provided until January 30. The bill will pay wages to furloughed government workers, restore federal funds withheld from state and local governments, and rehire agency employees who were laid off during the shutdown. It is currently unclear how quickly the government shutdown can be ended. The Senate needs the consent of all members to quickly end the shutdown, and any senator could delay the process for several days through procedural means. U.S. House Speaker Johnson also stated that he would notify lawmakers two days in advance to return to Washington. ( Jin10 )
